I know, I know. Technically it should be Paris. But for me it’s Italy. Having visited many cities around Italy I have never been to Lake Como so we decided to include it in our travels this year, and I’m so glad we did.
Arriving in Milan, we rented a little Fiat and drove the short distance to the lake to the little town of Varenna and then up the hill to Perledo where our AirBnB was located. The trip took about an hour and a half and we were very glad to reach the lake away from the horrible Milan pollution. Luckily, the sun was shining and it was warm when we arrived (something we hadn’t experienced in a while!) so we immediately went to the mini mart and bought some wine and cheese to have on our balcony. After a quick nap we headed to the Castello di Vezio, a beautiful old castle on the way down the hill. After taking some photos we continued walking down the cobblestones towards Varenna to eat dinner and watch the sun set. And if I’m really honest, to find some gelato because what would a trip to Italy be without gelato!
The next day we visited the delightful Villa Monastero and then drove around the lake to our next accommodation in Lenno. We dropped off our bags and walked to one of the amazing locations they used to film Casino Royale. The gardens here are amazing and a must see. Unfortunately the next day we woke up to heavy rain for our last day in Como. We made the most of it anyway and jumped on the ferry across to Bellagio. You can just imagine what this place looks like in better weather! I would highly recommend and would love to go back one day.
